India 2005 Travelogue

"There once was a couple from Delhi
Who went around belly-to-belly
Because, in their haste,
They used library paste,
Instead of petroleum jelly."

Prologue:

Someone once asked me why I wanted to go to India. Most of the time, I just tell them that it was next on our list. That's true, but there's more to it than that. India is a cultural experience. Kathy and I try to alternate between "nature" trips (e.g. African safaris or Amazon jungle cruises) and "cultural" Trips (e.g. Turkey, Greece). My underlying motivation is this: all my life, I have been studying the religious beliefs of people. Every trip we take, Kathy and I purchase gifts that represent the concept of God for that culture, and when we get home, we add them to an altar area we set up in our library. In Peru, we bought a sun-god and some pagan statues to represent "God" to the ancient forest-dwellers. In Greece, we bought Christian icons. In Thailand, we bought a statue of Buddha. In Turkey, we bought a decorate plate with writings from the Koran to represent Islam. But India is one of the most populated countries in the world, and Hinduism is one of the biggest religions in the world. Hinduism is one of the most ancient religions. It is rich with mythology, symbolism, and tradition. There isn't one holy book, there are hundreds. The Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, the Mahabarata, the Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali, the Sutras. The list goes on and on. It was also the biggest gap in our "God" collection. I knew I had to get there and see it for myself.
